 Worship - Service MinistersAcolytes Young people are warmly welcomed into the ministry of acolyting at Emmanuel Church. Through annual or semiannual training sessions, an effort is made to create an atmosphere wherein the acolytes may be confident in their roles and upright in their involvement in the solemnity of the service. At the same time they are relaxed in the knowledge of the moral support, gratitude and appreciation they receive from both priest and congregation. Training sessions are generally followed by pizza meals so that fellowship is fully felt! In the spring of 2002, the roles and duties of the three acolyte positions were redefined and clarified: Crucifer: The Crucifer is seen as the "head" of the acolyting team and is asked to take responsibility for helping to guide the others before and during the service. The Crucifer carries the Cross in and out, sits in the sanctuary, and assists with Communion. Flag bearer: The Flag bearer carries the United States flag in and out, sits in the chancel, dispenses and collects the offering plates, and helps with the flow of people at the altar rail during Communion. Crucifers and Flag bearers are generally aged 12 and older. Torchbearer: The New role of Torchbearer was introduced to give those as young as 9 or 10 a chance to get involved in the service. The two torchbearers have only to process and recess together following the cross, yet they can observe the jobs of the more experienced acolytes. They sit in the nave, flanking the baptismal font. Greeters/Presenters The greeters stand outside to greet and provide assistance to everyone as they arrive for the service. It is simply a matter of arriving about 15 minutes early and being a cheery and caring face - it's fun! Usually the greeters also present the sacraments at the service. This involves carrying the bread and wine forward to the altar when the ushers bring the offerings forward. This is a very simple way to be helpful, yet a most important and meaningful one. For more information, please contact Em Green at 540-456-6334. Ushers Ushering is a great way to serve Emmanuel. It allows you to meet everyone as they come in. Ushers give out bulletins and show people to their seats. Ushering also includes taking up the offering and opening pew doors during Communion. for more information, please contact Luther Reynolds at 540-456-6334. Ushers - Process and Advice Lay Readers The Lay Reader reads the Lessons from the Old and New Testaments and leads the reading of the Psalm for each service. As a Lay Reader, a parishioner is an important minister of the church. His/her ministry is nothing less than bringing the Word of God to the people of God. The readings may be the only opportunity for God to reach out to someone. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Charley Chabot at 540-456-6334. Lay Reader - Process and Advice Counters The counters, in teams of two, count and record the offerings in the collection plates and deposit the money in the church's account.
