Emmanuel Church, Greenwood Parish, has been singularly blessed by the generosity of its members and friends. In March, 1975, the Vestry unanimously approved a Resolution establishing the Memorial Endowments. It invited the members and friends of Emmanuel Church to create endowments honoring the departed and provided that these be combined in a single Fund to be administered in furtherance of exclusively religious, charitable or educational purposes by three Trustees who were understood to be the Trustees of the Church already in office, and that none of the principal assets of the fund would ever be withdrawn and expended except in extraordinary necessity. A brochure was drawn up and circulated inviting members and friends of Emmanuel Church to make donations or bequests in honor of persons departed and they responded magnificently. The Trustees at the time were Francis P. Brawley, George Ellinger, and Langhorne Gibson. The first memorial endowment was established in memory of Frederic William Scott and Elizabeth Strother Scott by their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Anderson. This was followed in 1976 by the Genevieve Peyton Harris endowment, established by Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Peyton III, who made periodic contributions to it thereafter. Later that year the Purcell Family endowment was established by six descendants of Samuel Harwood Purcell and Elizabeth Ashton Garrett Purcell. In 1979, Margaret Elizabeth Woodson died and left the bulk of her estate in a trust that constitutes the J.T. Morris and D.T. Woodson endowment. The Frederic W. Scott endowment was created by a generous gift from Mr. Scott's estate in 1980. The Christian Education endowment was given in 1985 by Elizabeth Hobbs in memory of William Hobbs. The Lillian Fox Hines endowment was established by a gift from her estate in 1988. The Davis Family memorial endowment was begun in 1993 with a gift from Mary Davis McConnell and her brother William Crump Davis, Jr. and with subsequent contributions by Mrs. McConnell and other members of the Davis family, descendants of our first rector. It commemorates all generations of the family, especially William Crump Davis (died 1977), Dorothy Lovell Davis (died 1987), and William Crump Davis, Jr. (died 1994). A major endowment was established in 1998 and increased in 1999 from the estate of Patricia Stuart, a long-time member of Emmanuel. The Endowment Board is currently composed of trustees Theodore Caplow, Elizabeth Scott, and James Neligan as Trustees of the Church; the Rector, Charles Mullaly; Associate Rector, Sarah Kinney Gaventa; Senior Warden, ex officio; Mary Buford Hitz as Secretary to the Board; and Mr. Terrence Sieg. The Board meets annually to allocate income from the Endowment Fund to worthy causes that are church-connected and/or locally based. It is the Board's custom to meet and talk with the organization's representatives before an initial grant is made. In 2007, the Endowment was able to give $137,500 in grants to three dozen organizations engaged in Christian good works, including the Emmanuel Committee working with victims of hurricane Katrina. The Endowment Board invites members and friends of Emmanuel to recommend additional charitable enterprises that might benefit from our support. Updated 11/12/2008 |
