Dot We Reach Out - Bread Fund

The Emmanuel-Holy Cross Bread Fund is a food distribution service for needy individuals and families living in the Albemarle County/Nelson County region. Started in 1984, the Bread Fund now serves approximately 130 families each month.

Emmanuel volunteers gather at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Batesville on the first Saturday of every month to distribute boxes of food supplied by the Blue Ridge Food Bank of Verona, VA.

Two large trucks haul 9,000 - 10,000 pounds of food to the church for boxing each month. The Food Bank receives some food from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. The remaining food comes from food processors in the area, such as Perdue, Little Debbie, area grocery stores and food drives conducted by civic organizations, such as the Boy Scouts. The food is distributed to qualified families on the first Saturday, and boxing for the next month is performed on the following Wednesday.

If you would like to volunteer or would like to obtain more information about the Bread Fund, please contact E.O. Woodson, Alice Barnett or Cindy Kirchner through the church office, 504-456-6334.
